How to choose a roofing contractor

JR Roofing News

We have been contacted numerous times by customers in Blackpool who have been ripped off or are worried that it may happen to them. It is a big shame that this is so rife within the roofing industry but we are trying to do our bit to stop our local community from becoming victims. Here are some things to bear in mind when choosing a roofer:

Get Quotes From Different Roofers

We always advise contacting three different roofing companies. If you have problems with your roof, you can compare the advice given by the roofer and the quote.

Comparing Quotes

Are you being quoted like-for-like? We like to categorise roofing materials into the basic range, standard, and the finest. If your budget allows, we recommend using the highest spec of materials to ensure maximum longevity for your new roof.

Price Isn’t Everything

Often a roofing contractor is chosen based on the lowest price. We would not advise using price as the sole reason to choose a roofer, but it is helpful as a guide. Does the quote come out much cheaper than the other quotes or a lot more expensive?

Reviews and Recommendations

Always be sure to check reviews of a potential roofing contractor. We recommend looking at different websites to get an overall feel for the contractor.

No Cold Callers

Trading standards advise never to deal with cold callers or doorstep sellers and we couldn’t agree more. A reliable roofing contractor does not have to knock on doors to find potential customers.

A competent roofer is always proud of their work. They will be more than happy to show you pictures of their previous work or give you the address of roofs they have completed so that you can take a look for yourself.

Work Start

When can the work be carried out? As a rule of thumb, a good roofer will have work booked and it could be a concern if they can get to you at short notice. Occasionally if the job is small or particularly urgent, the contractor may be able to prioritise the work.

Is the roofing contractor accredited?

We highly recommend using a roofer that is with an association such as the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC), National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), or Which? Trusted Traders. These associations ensure the roofer adheres to standards and codes of conduct which form an extra layer of protection for you.
