Why the customer contacted us...
David called us about a few concerns he had with his roof, noticing that it has started leaking, which is an issue we face often. Something we didn’t expect was that spray foam was used for insulation, which is a big issue when doing roof repairs. Luckily, David was looking to replace his roof, with no hesitation, so we booked him in for a Survey.
What was wrong with the roof?
We first looked at the exterior of the roof using our drone, and the first thing we noticed was the number of slate repairs. We could see a good amount of replaced slates, showing us the roof was old and going through nail fatigue, as well as some cracked ones. When we looked at the ridges, we found cracked, deteriorating mortar, which was one of the reasons for the damp inside the roof. The mortar on the chimney was delaminated and missing flashing, and the roof had a poorly installed bonding gutter.
On internal inspection, there were issues with damp and the infamous spray foam. The reason why spray foam is such a big problem is that it sticks to the tiles, making repairs and removal incredibly difficult and potentially causing more issues than before.
Having all of this information we reported it to David and quoted him for a re-roof, which was really needed to save this roof.
How we fixed the issue.
First we stripped all of the slates and completed spray foam removal by cutting it out in sections. Our team installed a fire break to the eaves and party wall of the property, and upgraded the thermal element by installing new insulation to meet current building regulations and improve the roof’s energy efficiency. We used an air and vapour permeable membrane and battens in preparation for the clay tiles. The chimneys required re-pointing, re-flaunching, and the installation of new lead flashing, soakers, and aprons. We replaced the previously installed mortar bed ridges with a dry fixed system to increase ventilation.
The finished result.
The roof speaks for itself, it came out looking amazing with the slate effect clay tiles, impressing our customer:
“I just had some friends ‘round for drinks, and they were admiring my new roof that JR Roofing’s done… We are really pleased with it all… Everybody’s said how smart and professional it looks. So, if anyone’s around Bispham and they’re driving around and they want to have a look at it, feel free to because we’re really pleased with it, and thank you JR Roofing.”
